The safety of Bisphenol A (BPA) has been a contentious issue for a long time.  It is a very important question because this chemical is in a huge number of our food products and containers.  It is in just about any plastic container that is clear, such as plastic water bottles.  It is in virtually all metal can linings.  It is also in cups, baby bottles, children’s products, eyeglasses, sports equipment, medical and dental devices, dental fillings & sealants, household electronics, etc.  Because it is so common, it is said that 93% of people have BPA in their bodies.

BPA is known to be an endocrine disruptor, which means that it causes hormonal problems in animals.  This is because it is chemically similar to hormones in the body, and can mimic the body’s own hormones, which may lead to negative health effects. This critical video below is 10 minutes long, but you really need this information!

The video above shows how the big corporations have enough power and influence to stop regulators from controlling them or making them comply with the law, which is known as the Food Quality Protection Act, passed by Bill Clinton.  FDA, EPA, the National Institutes of Environmental Health Sciences, and the National Toxicology Program all appear to be working for the plastic manufacturers!  These regulatory agencies have done no studies on the 15,000 chemicals which are suspected of being endocrine disruptors.

There have been a lot of studies that have shown that BPA is an endocrine disruptor, and that it actually makes cancer cells grow in animal cells!  A journalist for the Journal Sentinel, Susanne Rust, found in her research that approximately 80% of studies on BPA determined that it had harmful effects on lab animals.  They found that it caused breast cancer, testicular cancer, diabetes, hyperactivity, obesity, low sperm counts, miscarriages and other reproductive failures in lab animals.  She also found that about 75% of the studies that showed that BPA was safe were funded by the chemical industry.

It just appears that big corporations have more control over the law than either the government regulators or the public.  In fact, the regulators appear to be working in concert with the big corporations.  This means that people will continue to be exposed to BPA for many more years until it becomes readily apparent that it is harmful.  But it will be too late for the people that have already been exposed to it for years.  It would seem that profits are more important than the health of people.
