Despite the lack of coverage that mass media is giving to the Fukushima nuclear disaster, the releases of radioactive nuclides will negatively affect the world for a long time. Experts agree that there is no safe level of radiation exposure. According to reports various sources, including the EPA, there is food with radionuclides being found in the food supply in America. And radioactive particles that are taken internally are many times more dangerous than being exposed to external radiation.
There appears to be a media blackout of information about the massive levels of nuclear fallout products being released into the atmosphere. Most governments around the world are proclaiming that low levels of radiation are not harmful enough to raise concern about side effects. The government of Japan was consistently stating that the Fukushima releases were not significant until it could no longer be denied because of independent sources confirming that radiation levels were very high.
Any radiation exposure will increase cancer rates. Associate Professor Tilman Ruff of University of Melbourne’s Nossal Institute for Global Health says that even though there is a threshold for some effects of radiation, there is none for cancer. There is a difference between being irradiated from radioactive sources, and the ingestion of radionuclides that become integrated into an organism and emit dangerous radiation for years. Radionuclides that consistently, continuously release radiation into the body literally increase the exposure level by many thousands of times. It is like a radiation factory being placed inside of your body. When some radionuclides, such as plutonium, are embedded in the body, it makes it very probable that the person will contract and die of cancer.
The claims of low-level radiation being innocuous are false. Most radioactive elements lead to cancer over the long term. Radioactive iodine goes to the thyroid, causing thyroid cancer; cesium-137 goes to the brain and muscles; strontium-90 goes to the bone, causing bone cancer and leukemia. The worst part about it is that over time, the radioactive elements will accumulate in the food chain, and in breast milk, and in human fetuses, and they are thousands of times more radiosensitive than adults. As time goes on, these nuclear products will cause epidemics of cancer, leukemia, genetic disease. It will probably be catastrophic to animal and plants as well.
It is not surprising that the authorities would be very hesitant to report on the dangers of the release of radioactive particles into the atmosphere. If the truth about the dangers of this were to be honestly reported, it might cause mass panic. I don’t think it is justified though because people could take steps to protect themselves from these harmful effects. The use of sodium bicarbonate could be a viable solution to the problem of radioactive contamination. It is a powerful, yet inexpensive and relatively harmless chemical.
