Cannabinoids have been proven to kill cancer tumor cells. The active components of marijuana, called cannabinoids, inhibit tumor growth in laboratory animals, and have also been proven to actually kill cancer cells. In fact, the US government has known this for over 30 years. In fact, cannabinoids have also been demonstrated to kill antibiotic resistant bacteria, like methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), just as effectively as vancomycin and other powerful antibiotics.
I found an article describing a study that was published in Nature Reviews-Cancer that gives a historic explanation about how THC and other natural cannabinoids inhibit tumor cell growth. They also have been found to inhibit the growth of blood vessels that supply tumors. This study was performed by a Manuel Guzman of Madrid, Spain.
Even though marijuana and cannabinoids have been proven in a high number of scientific studies to inhibit the growth of cancer cells, kill cancer cells, induce tumor cell death, as well as other beneficial health effects, we expect marijuana and cannabinoids to continue to be prohibited by the government. We also expect that marijuana and cannabinoids will continue to be vilified by the mainstream media and the government. This news about the value of marijuana and cannabinoids is a blatant refutation of the stance that government and the medical establishment have taken.
A recent article on the web site for the European Coalition for Just and Effective Drug Policies (ENCOD) reports that the US National Cancer Institute updates confirm that medical cannabis has been a successful cancer treatment. They actually admitted that medical cannabis may be recommended for symptom management and for direct anti-tumor effect.
In their summary, they state that:
- Cannabis has been used medicinally for thousands of years before it was outlawed by many countries, and declared an illegal substance,
- Cannabinoids have been found to activate specific cellular receptors found all throughout the body to produce pharmacologic effects, especially in the central nervous system and the immune system,
- Cannabinoids have been found to be beneficial for cancer-related side effects,
- Cannabinoids has anti-emetic effects, stimulates appetite, relieves pain and induce sleep,
- Cannabinoids are usually prescribed by physicians for cancer symptom management,
- Cannabinoids are usually stored in fatty tissue in the body, and are excreted slowly (half-life of approximately 1-3 days),
- Even abrupt cessation of cannabinoid intake does not cause rapid declines in plasma concentrations that would cause severe or abrupt withdrawal symptoms or drug cravings.
In the same article, Robert Melamede, Ph.D., Cannabis Science’s CEO says that:
One of the most interesting findings that has emerged since the discovery of the endocannabinoid system (marijuana-like compounds produced by humans, and all vertebrates) is that cannabinoids have profound cancer-killing and anti-metastatic properties. There is strong scientific support, demonstrated in tissue culture and animal studies, of the potent cancer killing properties of cannabinoids for such deadly cancers as glioma, lung cancer, breast and prostate cancer, leukemias and lymphomas, and as well as skin cancers.
Currently the federal government prohibitionist position on cannabis is hindering the medical community by delaying vitally important clinical cannabis research. I was quite elated when I recently saw that the NCI posted on their web page “In the practice of integrative oncology, the health care provider may recommend medicinal Cannabis not only for symptom management but also for its possible direct anti-tumor effect.” I foolishly thought that finally there would be official recognition of the modern peer-reviewed science that shows that the cancer killing properties of cannabinoids. Sadly, this statement was removed, without comment, within hours of its posting.
Once again, a natural, effective, non-patentable substance has been suppressed by the medical establishment. It isn’t surprising that the Big Pharma and other medical authorities would react to medical marijuana negatively. The most ironic part of this is that while the authorities and government continue to jail and persecute marijuana use and users not under their control, Big Pharma is simultaneously performing research on cannabinoids and actually trying to develop patentable treatments based on marijuana extracts! Seems like they are more interested in making money that using raw marijuana. Police, courts and other local governments would be against the legalization of marijuana because they make a large amount of money from the prosecution of marijuana offenses. Once again, it appears that politics and money have more influence on cancer treatment than the scientific facts.
