There have been ongoing arguments, debates and claims that the chemicals that are put in the water (for various reasons) are toxic or harmless, depending on what side of the ‘fence’ one happens to be on. I have had my own feelings about the situation, and from the evidence that I’ve seen, there are definitely hazardous, dangerous, toxic, unhealthy chemicals being put in the water that we get from the tap as well as from bottled water sources.
In most water treatment facilities in the United States, chlorine is used as a disinfectant. The disinfectant’s purpose is to reduce the amount of pathogenic (disease-causing) organisms that live in the water. Chlorine also acts as a general biocide, killing germs, algae, and other micro-organisms. Chlorine is more than 3 times as effective as a disinfectant against Escherichia coli than equivalent concentrations of bromine, and 6 times more effective than equivalent concentrations of iodine. continue reading…
