This video examines the connection between melanoma and sunscreens.  In addition, environmental toxins, UV-A and UV-B, and a plethora of other related issues are discussed by this expert from UC-San Diego, Edward Gorham, PhD.

In summary, they found that melanoma is correlated with higher latitudes, indoor workers, and more affluent countries.  Pigmentation is a protective factor, and people who have the ability to tan are at a lower risk of melanoma.  Melanoma incidence is increasing the fastest of all the cancers. continue reading…

Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer with over 2 million people a year being diagnosed.  More people come down with skin cancer than those diagnosed with breast, prostate, lung and colon cancer combined.  Around 90% of non-melanoma skin cancers are related to UV radiation from the sun.  Squamous cell carcinoma and basal cell carcinoma are the two main forms of non-melanoma skin cancer.  40 to 50% of people in America who live to age 65 will be diagnosed with skin cancer at least once in their lives.

It now appears that although sunscreen has been touted as a great way to protect people from skin cancer, an FDA study has now shown that they may actually be a cause of cancer. Approximately half of the 500 most popular sunscreen products are alleged to accelerate the rate and growth of skin cancer due to the vitamin A content.

Although the products do prevent sunburn, they do not stop the UV radiation from the sun from causing tumors and lesions on your skin.  This study was performed by researchers from the Environmental Working Group.  In fact, the study says that only 39 of the 500 products investigated were deemed ‘safe and effective’. continue reading…
